July 7 to 16, 2007
The Kaytee Avian Foundation in association with the BioBrasil Foundation and Tropical Nature Travel announces their official Foundation trip to the Hyacinth Macaw Conservation Project in the dry, sunny, mosquito-free forests of northeastern Brazil.
Welcome to the Hyacinth Cliffs, located in the heart of the wooded savannah ecosystem that covers much of northern central Brazil. Here, where Red mesa cliffs tower over sweeping grasslands sprinkled with Mauritia palm groves and dry forest trees, you will spend time amongst the world's largest macaw, the Hyacinth Macaw.
The lodge complex is located at Brazil's new, 1.8 million acre Parnaiba Headwaters National Park. At one-third the size of New Jersey, this park is Brazil's largest park outside the Amazon, and protects more dry forest than any reserve on earth.
Within the park is a 10,000-acre reserve managed by our local conservation partner, the BioBrasil Foundation. This reserve is vital for the conservation of the wooded savannah ecosystem as lands to the south are being increasingly cleared for agriculture.
This unique project employs former macaw trappers, who now maintain and patrol the reserve and use their knowledge and expertise to share the natural diversity of the area with you.
From the comfort of Hyacinth Cliffs you can see some of the most exciting wildlife in Brazil. The park harbors more than 1500 Hyacinth Macaws, 50 - 100 times more than any other national park. Just 15 minutes from the Camp a large flock of Hyacinth Macaws can be observed each morning and evening as they gather to eat palm nuts.
It is also the most important reserve for the endangered Maned Wolf, which is the world's largest and most beautiful wild canid. Finally, Parnaiba Park is the only place on Earth where Brown Capuchin monkeys demonstrate the world's most complex tool use by non-human primates.
