Nazca Lines and Paracas

Travel four-and-a-half hours by bus south of Lima through coastal desert to Ica, the center of Peru's wine-producing region.

Fly over the incredible pre-Inca Nazca Lines etched in the desert sand, and explore Ica's Regional Museum. Then cross the desert to the coastal town of Paracas and explore the wildlife of the cold Humboldt Current on a boat trip to the Ballestas Islands and an excursion to the Paracas National Reserve.

Day 1 – Lima to Ica to Paracas
Depart by tourist bus from Lima in the morning and drive southwards along the desert coast, through irrigated valleys of cotton, fruit and olives to the town of Ica, the center of wine and Pisco production in Peru. Here we board a light aircraft to fly over the world-famous Nazca Lines. This flight gives spectacular views of the geoglyphs-lines and animal designs (such as a spider, monkey, whale and hummingbird) which have been cut into the sand by pre-Columbian cultures who settled in the area from around 900 BC until 600 AD. After lunch, visit the Ica Regional Museum, which houses a fine collection of ceramics and textiles from the Paracas, Nazca and Inca cultures. Drive to Paracas to spend the night. L

Day 2 – Paracas to Lima
Morning boat trip to the Ballestas Islands, part of the Paracas National Reserve, which is the only protected coastal marine eco-system in Peru. The islands are home to thousands of sea birds including Inca Terns and Peruvian Boobies, the occasional Humboldt penguin, and hundreds of Sea Lions and Fur Seals. Later, explore the Pacific coastal desert of the Reserve, including a visit to the Julio C. Tello Museum, which exhibits artifacts from the Paracas culture that lived in this area from around 500 BC to 200 AD. In the late afternoon, return to Lima by bus. B
