Machu Picchu Extension

No trip to Peru is complete without a visit to Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, perched majestically in the midst of forested mountains. This famous archaeological site is a testament to the engineering prowess of the Incas, and you'll delight in exploring the ancient citadel, and through it, Incan life and customs.

This trip allows a taste of the Inca Trail without days of hiking and camping. We begin the hike from the train stop at Kilometer 104 and follow the trail for six hours to the spectacular view of Machu Picchu from Inti Punku, the gate of the sun. From here we descend onto the world famous "Lost City." After a restful night in a hotel, we return to Machu Picchu at dawn to see the ruins in a perfect morning light. In the afternoon, we return to Cusco by train.

Day 1 - Cusco to Machu Picchu
We catch the early morning train from Wanchaq station for the three-and-a-half hour trip through the Andes to Machu Picchu. Spend the morning with your guide exploring this majestic citadel with unbelievable vistas and ancient mysteries. Continue exploring on your own in the afternoon, and later return to the town of Aguas Calientes, in the valley below Machu Picchu on the Urubamba River, to spend the night. B, L

Day 2 - Machu Picchu to Cusco
You'll have a second opportunity to explore the wonders of Machu Picchu on your own, and to better understand the harmonious mixture of architecture and topography so typical of Incan city planning. Early risers who catch the first bus to the mountaintop will be rewarded with an ancient city almost free of other visitors. In the afternoon, return to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Cusco. B

SERVICES INCLUDED: Transfers to and from Cusco train station, train to start of hike and return to Cusco. Bilingual guide (English/Spanish), box lunch, one breakfast and one lunch. Overnight at selected hotel.

NOT INCLUDED: Inca Trail entrance fee, alcoholic beverages, extras, tips, additional tours, laundry and other services.
