The Incan citadel of Choquequirao lies hidden deep in the Andes, ringed by
mountain peaks and thickly forested slopes, a sort of hidden sister city to
famous Machu Picchu. Its name means "Cradle of Gold," and the city is
dedicated to the worship of the mountain and river gods of the Inca. Trek
into the heart of ancient Inca country, surrounded by history, myth and
incredible scenery. Please note this is a camping trip. Day 1 – Cusco to Chiquisca We leave Cusco early to begin our journey to the village of Cachora, where the trek officially begins. Driving through the farmland of the Anta Plateau we'll be surrounded by the high Andean peaks of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, where we'll spend the next three days hiking. When we arrive at Cachora, we'll meet up with our crew and horse train, which carries our supplies. As our hike begins, we'll catch a glimpse of far-off Choquequirao and then wind our way down toward the Apurimac River Canyon. We'll make camp for the night at the oasis of Chiquisca. L,D
Day 2 – Chiquisca to ChoquequiraoWe'll set off early to finish our descent to the canyon floor. Once there, we'll cross the raging Apurimac-known as the "Great Spirit Speaker" to the Incas-on a suspension bridge. Ascending on a zigzag trail, we'll pass through the dry scrub of the canyon and into the upland meadows for an exceptional vista of the ruins themselves. Finally we pass through the cool beautiful cloud forest surrounding Choquequirao and camp near the site. B,L,D Day 3 – Choquequirao The ancient city reveals itself as we spend the whole day exploring these stunning ruins. Choquequirao means "Cradle of Gold," and the site is thought to have been built by the son of Machu Picchu's creator, to rival the more famous and accessible citadel. Here, terraces sweep out from the main plaza towards incredible vistas of the Cordillera Vilcabamba. Built as an elite city for ceremonial purposes, the residences, royal baths, halls, gardens and stairways pay tribute to the engineering genius and careful planning that typifies Incan architecture. In the afternoon, soak up the atmosphere as you explore the temples, perhaps seeing an Andean Condor soar past overhead. B,L,D
Day 4 – Choquequirao to ChiquiscaEarly in the morning, we'll enjoy a spectacular Andean sunrise before crossing the meadows of Maranpata. Here we'll visit another set of ruins-Incan storehouses that mark the outer edge of their settlement here. Hiking back down to the river, we'll have a chance to take a dip in a swimming hole, as the bottom of the canyon can get very hot during the day. We'll make camp again at Chiquisca. B,L,D Day 5 – Chiquisca to Cusco We begin our final leg of hiking, ascending again out of the canyon and away from the Apurimac River and re-enter the mountain grasslands and the stunning Andean scenery. When we reach the village of Cachora again, we'll say goodbye to our trail crew and make the return drive to Cusco. B,L Staying on in Peru? Whether your interest is archaeology, wildlife or culture, in a short extension tour you can experience more of the rich living heritage of this vibrant country.
