When choosing a Galapagos Islands cruise there is a vast array of ships to choose from—large cruise ships with a capacity of up to 100 passengers, to medium sized yachts from 32 to 48 passengers, and small yachts for 8 to 26 passengers.

In general the medium and large vessels tend to be more stable and spacious, with a greater range of social and evening activities. Some are also faster than the smaller boats, which enables them to get to some of the more remote islands. Families with children may prefer the larger ships because they tend to have more room. However, because of the large number of passengers, there can be congestion when landing, and some sites may be impossible to visit because of the number of passenger and the ship's size.

Smaller ships offer a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere, with the opportunity for more wildlife viewing and access to some sites that the large cruise ships are unable to reach. However, passengers on the small boats are much more likely to feel the motion of the waves than those on the larger ships.
