return to Quito with senses – and lists – full of the sights and
sounds of beautiful birds.
Day
1- Airport transfer from Quito Airport to San Jorge Eco-Lodge
& Botanical Reserve and overnight in San Jorge/Quito.
Free day at leisure. Depending on your arrival time today, start birding as soon as you arrive from the airport! Here in the Quito footills, it is home to Rufous Antpitta, Hooded Siskin, Black
Flowerpiercer, Variable Hawk, Blue & Yellow Tanager, Scarlet bellied mountain
tanager, and highly endangered species such as the Cinerus Conebill and the
Crimson-Mantled Woodpecker; with hummers such as: Purple backed thornbill,
Golden breasted puffleg, and Rainbow beared thornbill. These are just a few
of the over 130 bird species found in this paradise.
While walking
through the gardens of San Jorge, you will also find numerous varieties of hummingbirds
at their feeders stationed throughout the grounds: Western emerald, Swordbill
hummingbird, Tirian metal tail, White Bellied woodstar, Sparkling
Violetar, Shining sunbeam, Saphire-vented puffleg, Black Tail trainbearer,
Mountain velvet breast, Green tail trainbearer, White bellied woodstar, Wing
shining Sunbeam, and Great Saphire to name a few. All at an altitude
of 3150 meters or
9,800 ft!
At the same time you will take in the fabulous panoramic views of Quito, its
valleys and mountains along with views of the volcano peaks of Cayambe, Antizana,
Pasochoa, Pululahua, Pichincha and Illalso. You can observe 11 mountains from
various points of San Jorge Botanical Reserve. Recently spotted at
San Jorge Botanical Reserve, the very rare Curved Bill Tinamou, Red Crested
Cotinga, Andean Condor (recently spotted); including the endemic and endangered
Black breasted puffleg.
Day 2 - Birding San Jorge de Tandayapa Hummingbird Reserve; late afternoon transfer to San Jorge de Milpe Eco-Lodge with a stop at The Middle of the World Monument in Cala Cali; overnight San Jorge/Milpe.
Here you will enjoy birding in the lower valley with panoramic
views, wild surroundings, tropical plants/flowers and exotic wildlife. The
bungalows have decks with hammocks for relaxing at lunchtime, feeders, spectacular
views, and 40 species of orchids. We’ll also visit Tandayapa Falls within
the Choco Endemic Bird Area (EBA) of northwest Ecuador. You may spot up to
15 varieties of Hummingbirds, Tanager flocks including Grass-green Tanager,
Metallic green tanager, Blue-winged Mountain Tanager, Golden napped tanager,
Cineraous Harrier, and also Toucan Barbet, Golden headed quetzal and Crimson-rumped
Toucanet; and possibly the Andean Cock of the Rock. (B, Box Lunch ,D)
Day 3 – Birding San Jorge de Milpe
Orchid & Bird
Reserve; late afternoon transfer to San Jorge Eco-Lodge and overnight San Jorge/Quito.
Enjoy the pristine beauty at the San Jorge de Milpe Eco-Lodge, with observatory deck, panorama views, spot birds from your room, beautiful birding trails, cascading waterfalls, running rivers, observatory sites, hammocks for relaxing, with over 450 bird species, 30 species of hummers, and 300 varieties of orchids; all with spectacular scenery.
You can go birding through relatively untouched temperate and subtropical forest. We will look for: Choco toucan, Pale mandible, Arazari, Swallow tailed Kite, Cattle Egret, Black Vulture, Turkey Vulture, Ruddy Pigeon, Maroon tailed Parakeet, Red billed Parrot, Bronze winged Parrot, White collared Swift, Red headed Barbet, Bay headed Tanager, Summer Tanager, Black capped Tanager, Blue gray Tanager, White lined Tanager, palm Tanager, Swallow Tanager, Flame faced, Rufous throated, Silver throated Tanager, Blue necked Tanager, Lemon rumped Tanager, Goldn Tanager, Thick billed Euphonia, Buff throated Saltator, Black winged Saltator, Blue black Grassquit, Yellow bellied Seedeater, Pale mandible Aracari, Squirel Cuckoo and Roadside Hawk. Toucan Barbet , Laughing Falcon, Gray headed Kite, Black checked Woodpecker, White winged Tanager, Moss back Tanager, Ochre breasted Tanager, Tropical Gnatcatcher, Band backed Wren, Black stripped Sparrow, Broad billed Motmot, Rufous Motmot, Barred Hawk, Broad winged Hawk, Long tailed Antbird, Buff rumped Warbler, Boat billed Flycatcher and Rufous winged Tyrannulet, Golden olive Woodpecker. Hummingbirds: White whiskered Hermit, Stripe throated Hermit, Tooth billed Hummingbird, White necked Jacobin, Green Thorntail, Violet bellied Hummingbird, Purple chested Hummingbird, Purple bibbed Whitetip, Empress Brilliant, Velvet purple Coronet, purple crowned Fairy, Purple throated Woodstar. Day 4 – AM transfer to Quito Airport or
downtown Quito.
Today we will transfer you back to Quito to
