On this private tour you will explore the beautiful Cotopaxi National Park, at the outskirts of the highest active volcano of the world and its stark beauty. Then visit an Indian Market and the handcrafted pottery center at La Victoria. Explore the impacting countryside and towns around the Hacienda La Ciénega.
We'll set out early from Quito, heading south and taking in breathtaking views of the Avenue of the Volcanoes and their snow-capped peaks. We'll visit Cotopaxi National Park, an ecological sanctuary of 88,920 acres, around the magnificent Cotopaxi Volcano, which rises 5897 meters (19,347 feet) above sea level. The evergreen landscape of the Ecuadorian highlands is one of the main attractions, along valleys and mountains covered by multicolored fields. After an hour and a half, the entrance to the park is reached and then it’s up a dirt road for approximately one hour. Upon arrival to the park there is an introductory briefing about the habitat of the Andean paramo or moorlands, its flora and fauna in the small Interpretation Center.
We'll continue on to Limpiopungo Lagoon to observe a variety of birds and occasionally wild horses. On clear days, the Cotopaxi Volcano is the backdrop. A short walk around the lagoon allows the observation of the Andean flora. We may see hawks, hummingbirds, ducks and even the Andean Condor!
This evening you will stay overnight in the oldest and most splendid colonial style hotel in Cotopaxi province, Ecuador, has belonged to the descendants of Marques of Maenza since the seventeenth century.
Situated on the outskirts of Volcano Cotopaxi and its National Park, it’s just an hour and a half’s journey from Quito, capital of the Middle of the World.
Surrounded by the Andes most magnificent snow-capped peaks, the hacienda, which was converted into a beautiful Ecuadorian mountainside lodge with two-metre thick walls carved from volcanic rock, finally opened its doors to the public in 1982, offering charm, history and tradition. (L, D)
