On this private tour, you'll enjoy the spectacular Andean scenery of Cotopaxi and the Avenue of the Volcanoes
first-hand. You'll have a chance to visit a colorful market and relax at
Hacienda San Agustin de Callo
before hiking around the mountains!
Quito to San Agustin de Callo
We'll set out early from Quito, heading south and taking in breathtaking views of the Avenue of the Volcanoes and their snow-capped peaks. We'll visit Cotopaxi National Park, an ecological sanctuary of 88,920 acres, around the magnificent Cotopaxi Volcano, which rises 5897 meters (19,347 feet) above sea level. The evergreen landscape of the Ecuadorian highlands is one of the main attractions, along valleys and mountains covered by multicolored fields. After an hour and a half, the entrance to the park is reached and then it’s up a dirt road for approximately one hour. Upon arrival to the park there is an introductory briefing about the habitat of the Andean paramo or moorlands, its flora and fauna in the small Interpretation Center.
We'll continue on to Limpiopungo Lagoon to observe a variety of birds and occasionally wild horses. On clear days, the Cotopaxi Volcano is the backdrop. A short walk around the lagoon allows the observation of the Andean flora. We may see hawks, hummingbirds, ducks and even the Andean Condor!
This
evening you will stay overnight
in the beautiful farmhouse of San Agustin de Callo. Built on the site of
an important Inca Palace this working farm offers today's discerning traveler
an unrivaled glimpse into Ecuador's rich and colorful past. The hacienda´s
dining room as well as the chapel above are original Inca construction with
typical trapezoidal stones and walls. The Hacienda´s six individually
styled rooms have been designed to reflect the building's historical importance.
Visit Indian Markets
The second day of the excursion includes a visit to a colorful Indian market of the area (depending on the day of the week), the tiny village of La Victoria famous for the potteries and time to explore the countryside and small towns surrounding the Hacienda, on foot, bicycle or horseback. In the late afternoon we'll head back to Quito. (L, D)
