Experience this special tour deep in the heart of the Amazon! Uakari Floating Forest Lodge, in the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, is home to an incredible diversity of bird, mammal and aquatic life.
You'll have the chance to see the red-faced Uakari monkey and the enchanting Pink River Dolphin, and lucky guests might even spot a Pygmy Marmoset or a Manatee. The jungle will reveal itself to you from your floating home at the confluence of the Solimőes and Japurá Rivers.
Fly to Manaus on the Amazon River. We will meet you at the airport and take
you to your hotel. If you arrive by noon you will have time on your own
or time for an afternoon tour. As the capital of Amazonas, the largest state in Brazil, Manaus was the center of the lucrative rubber trade in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of the sights in this busy port city include the grand baroque-style Opera House, built during the height of the rubber boom. The mooring line at the docks is an interesting sight as it is supported by giant buoys that rise and fall with the level of the river, which varies drastically with the seasons. Stay in the Tropical Hotel or similar.
After breakfast, a guide will pick you up in the lobby of the hotel, and transfer you to the airport for the 09.00am to Tefe. After your arrival at 12:15 in Tefe, it's time to start your Uakari Lodge adventures! You will be transferred the short distance to the harbor for an hour-and-a-half
motorboat ride up the Rio Solimões to the Uakari Floating Forest Lodge. On the way, you might spot Pink River Dolphins. You'll spend the rest of the day exploring the Lodge and trails, perhaps resting in a hammock or fishing for piranhas!B
Animals in the forest wake up at sunrise. If you are interested in sighting as much wildlife as possible, you have to wake up early. Breakfast is served at 06:30 and at 7:00 the activities begin. You will take a walk (during the dry season) on one of the trails with the naturalist and the local guide to learn about the varzea’s environment (flooded forest). Our trails are designed not to be physically straining and most of them can be walked in three hours at the longest. During the flood (May-July), all trails will be done in a small paddle canoe (your guide will paddle you through the trail). In the afternoon you have a choice to accompany a researcher team or you can go to another wildlife viewing tour. You will travel around the landscapes, channels and lakes system that compose part of the varzea’s ecosystem. After dinner there is a night tour (on foot or by small canoe) to see the nocturnal fauna: tarantula spiders, opossum, two-toed sloth and brown throated three-toed sloth, amazon bamboo rats and bats. B,L,D
Rise early to go on a guided walk on one of the many
trails around the lodge. You might see one of four species of monkey, Three-Toed
Sloths, and any number of exotic birds. Or, traverse the river channels and
nearby lakes by canoe. In fact during the flooded season of January to April,
most of the excursions will be in a canoe!
After lunch, we'll take a motorboat to beautiful
Lake Mamirauá,
where you may encounter with Pink River Dolphins, Hoatzins and perhaps the
Pirarucu fish. Stay until sunset and on your way back, look for birds and monkeys
as they head to their roosting places for the night. Return to the lodge for
dinner. B,L,D
Set out early with your guide for a forest walk in search of more wildlife.
You might see a Capuchin or Squirrel monkey, or a prehistoric-looking Hoatzin
bird. Return to the lodge for a presentation on the Mamirauá Sustainable
Development Institute, the first of its kind in Brazil and which launched a
new era in rainforest conservation, by allowing local people living in the
reserve to remain there. In the afternoon, visit a nearby indigenous village
of the Caboclo people. You'll have the opportunity to learn about native life
in this remote region of the world and to buy locally produced handicrafts.
After your visit, return to lodge for dinner, spotting wildlife along the way
and enjoying the sunset. B,L,D
Take an early trail walk, canoe across a lake, or go fishing on your last morning
at Uakari. You will have time for lunch and a rest before departure from Tefe at 12.40 and arriving in Manaus at 13.40PM. Return to the airport for your 15.45 pm flight to Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo. B
