Barefoot Perfect Beaches of Belize
Belize is
famous for its laid-back attitude and Placencia is the perfect place to
celebrate it. Everything on the peninsula is calm and stress-free,
from the breeze in the coconut palms, to the waves lazily lapping the shore.
Snorkel on the many small
reefs and flats or take a boat ride out to the incredibly diverse cayes. Hike in the beautiful tropical Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve. Or, pick a spot on the miles of white-sand beach just to relax. This trip provides all those options in one laid-back location!
Day 1: Arrival & Flight to Placencia
On arrival at the Belize City airport, you will be met by a guide who
will help you check in for the 40 minute flight down to the coastal
fishing village of Placencia. Placencia Village sits at the very tip
of the narrow Placencia Peninsula in southern Belize. In English, it
means Point Pleasant, and being only sixteen miles long, it feels like
an island. Placencia’s beaches are commonly touted
as the very best on mainland Belize. Pick a spot on the miles of white-sand
beachs and you won’t hear planes or cars—just the sound of
waves from the Caribbean. The village’s tourism association
calls the beaches “Barefoot Perfect.” But that designation
fits the rest of the town as well. There are no paved roads in Placencia,
mearly a series of pathways for foot traffic. Main Street is just a sidewalk!
Belize is famous for its laid-back attitude and Placencia
is the perfect place tocelebrate
it. Everything on the peninsula is calm and stress-free, from the
breeze in the coconut palms, to the waves lazily lapping the shore. String
up a hammock and read, draw, take a nap. However, the Placencia’s
people know how to have fun there are lots of activities if you want
to be active. Because the second largest barrier reef in the world is
just offshore, the snorkeling and diving are phenomenal. The smooth waters
are also perfect for other watersports like kayaking, fishing, and sailing. Stay
at either the Turtle Inn, Roberts Grove or Nautical Inn in Placencia.
Day 2: Snorkel Trip
After breakfast you will be picked up for a snorkeling trip
out on the reef. A trip to Placencia is not complete without a boat ride out
to the incredibly diverse cayes that
lie between Placencia and Belize's Barrier Reef - second in size only
to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Here you can snorkel the many small
reefs and flats.
Lunch will be on a white sandy
beach. In the afternoon we'll snorkel off a pristine
barrier reef. Today, the country’s
nearly 200-mile-long, reef-sheltered coastline offers a bounty of clear, calm waters, steady winds, and an endless maze of cayes,
coves, and atolls. In the afternoon we'll transfer to the mainland and back to the hotel. Stay at either The Turtle Inn, Roberts
Grove or Nautical Inn in Placencia. Breakfast
and lunch included.
Day 3: Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve
This morning you will be picked up from your hotel for a guided
tour of the Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve and hiking in this beautiful
tropical nature reserve. About an hour’s drive from Placencia,
is the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, home of the world's first
Jaguar Reserve. The Sanctuary is a protected subtropical
rain forest surrounded by the Maya Mountains. Its name comes from the
cockscomb profile of the nearby Maya Mountains.
Although it is rare to see a jaguar (they are nocturnal), you can be
sure they are watching you as you feel their presence while exploring
their home. The Cockscomb sanctuary is also host to a number of different
species of birds, plants and other wildlife. These include the endangered Scarlet
Macaw, Keel Billed Toucan and Emerald Toucanet. The reserve
is also home to an abundance of amphibians and reptiles, including the
Red-Eyed Tree Frog. Among the mammals are coatis, tapirs, deer, otters, anteaters, armadillos,
and of course jaguars. After hiking on trails filled with iguanas,
peccaries, deer and other four legged friends, cool off under the refreshing
waterfall, or swim in the clear, fresh water of the stream before heading
home. Stay at either The Turtle Inn, Roberts Grove or Nautical Inn in Placencia.
Breakfast included.
Day 4: Free day to Relax
Today you can just relax on the beach, have some spa treatments or we
can arrange for an optional trip to a water or island destinations. Maybe
you would like us to arrange for a bit of “ancient” exploration. A
quick hop by boat across the Placencia Lagoon,
and a two hour van ride along the Southern Highway, will bring you to
the Maya Ruin sites of Nim Li Punit, discovered in 1976, and Lubaantun,
discovered about 1903. Once great city-states of the Mayan World, these
partially excavated sites help to provide you with the backdrop for the
incredible tales your guide will tell you of days long past. Tales
of Xibalba, the Mayan Underworld, and tales of the brother hero's and
their many challenges to their gods. Standing in the silent courtyards
you can almost feel the ghosts of the past. Stay at either The
Turtle Inn, Roberts Grove or Nautical Inn in Placencia. Breakfast
included.
Day 5: Transfer out
Transfer to Placencia airport for the 40min flight to Belize International
Airport in plenty of time for your flight out.
